Organisation Subcultures

Developments in industry necessitate specialist training for each occupation. Each occupation has its own traditions, language, body of knowledge and thought processes.
These provide those who learn and practise the occupation with a typical occupational identity. This often leads - in situations where employees with different occupations must work together - to communication problems, e.g. between engineers and economists. These differences seem to have deep roots and cannot be removed simply by exchanging information. A more far-reaching analysis of the levels of difference is necessary: language, thinking processes, problem-solving strategies, attitudes, emotions and interests. The organisational context and/or the group structure should also be socio-psychologically investigated.
Carefully tended prejudices towards other departments or occupations are contra-productive, e.g. in project teams. Thus there is a gain to be made for the company in improving cooperation between various departments and areas. In this project empirical results are achieved and analysed with the aid of social and organisational psychological theories. Strategies for the dissolving of barriers to communication are also discussed and recommended.
